Default daily closing for range ( and all other ) chart types ?

hello ninjaTraders,

on a fixed ranged chart ( let it be 40 range ), you will have one bar every day at the same time when the bar would be below 40 range. I think this is intended to be so, but this makes some kind of trading logic totally useless that worked in 6.5 but not in 7. For example if you want to use a range chart which has a range above the daily average range you will see that your range bar - that should not be finished by the day - will be finished, making your NT 6.5 calculating logic totally confused.

If the forced closing of such bars is intended ( I remember I read sg about this but not sure ) is there a way to have every bar the same size in a range type chart ? As far as I see the forced closing of bars works on renko and other chart types too, but on renko without changing the size of the bar. I dont use renko, but this would mess up renko based trading logic too. I assume at tick and volume based chart you will have a bar every day that does not have the proper tick, volume size.

kittyan,

Currently it will close any unfinished bar and start fresh on new days. There is currently no setting you can set to change the behavior.

is it planned to have the setting in some time ? within NT7 ? this seems to be quit an important question, because with this behavior NT 7 confuses time based view into non-time based view letting the non-time based charts non- consequent and non-logical to its original nature. I can assure you major differences can emerge as backtest results show. time before I thought of chart types with a time and an other ( range ) closing logic, I think you are close to it. maybe this would mean one more step to be ahead of your competitors.

If I understand this correctly, backtesting issues emerge when you do not close the bar at the end of the day, then your chart bars will always look different depending on your starting day of the chart thus, giving you completely different results. At this time, we do not plan to introduce bars that span across session boundaries.

hello,

Ray, I think my problem is the opposite ( but you are right with your different starting day theory, but this can be handled with different technics, but there is a fundamental change in setting up charts from NT 6.5 to NT 7 if I see clearly ).

On picture 7 from NT 7 you can see the bar closing at 5:59:57 letting the bar to be not a 40 range bar on a 40 range chart.
On picture 6 5 from NT 6.5 you can see that there is no bar closing at the above situation letting all the bar to be 40 ranged.

From some view of point ( if you want to have the same range bars on a given range chart - well if not this is not a real range chart any more, but something range like chart mixed up with session begin timing ) this is a backstep of NT 7 to NT 6.5 . The problem gets bigger if you use bigger and bigger ranges for your range chart. Of course with changing strategy code logic you can make the differences smaller ( not if your ranges are above daily ranges - check the attachments of 200 range chart with the same time period of nt7 and nt6.5, differences are obvious) but with bars that do not span across session boundaries the possible using ( not ideological but practical ) of NT 7 is heavily hindered .

So as far as I see we have to get familiar with different height bars on a fixed range type chart, right ?

Yes, there is a change between 6.5 and 7. In fact, in 6.5 our Tick and Volume bars were always cut at the end of the session, for some reason Range bars did not follow this concept. We just brought range bars inline with our general concept with NT7.
