Cannot get NT8 Beta 6 to install

    Cannot get NT8 Beta 6 to install

    I am upgrading from version B5 to version B6 and the installation fails (says rolling back action) and then NT8 no longer opens (I have to go through the repair steps on the B5 install to get it working again).

    I've tried completely renaming the "Custom" folder (effectively deleting) to make sure none of my custom indicators are causing a conflict with new B6 changes, but this doesn't make a difference.

    Is there a log file or something else I can do to see what is going on?

    There is a general MSI log that is generated under C:\Users\<User Profile>\AppData\Local\Temp

    The file name should start with MSI and end with .log. e.g., MSIdf6e.LOG

    If the info in that log is not enough, you can enable more vebose logging following info from this MS help article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/223300

      Thank you for the quick reply. The log file wasn't there, so I enabled the verbose logging, as suggested. The log file mentioned that it could not delete the NinjaTrader\bin64 folder. I found it to be locked in File Explorer, as well.

      I couldn't figure out what was keeping it locked, so I rebooted... and it was able to install!

      As someone who worked tech support in the past, sometimes I hate when rebooting actually works.

          Just FYI, I ran into the problem again when upgrading from Beta 6 to Beta 7 with locked files (with NT closed), so I dug into the cause some more.

          It seems there was a lock on files within the NinjaTrader 8 directory by Visual Studio (duh). Closing Visual Studio allows the upgrade to be successful.

          In case someone else runs into the problem...
