Debugging & Backtesting

Hello,

I am attempting to debug a strategy using VS 2008.

I have followed the "Visual Studio Debugging" directions here.

I have successfully debugged an indicator that I apply to a chart, so I know that I have VS set up properly.

When I try to debug a strategy by running a backtest in the Strategy Analyzer, VS doesn't stop at breakpoints.

Any ideas? Is what I'm trying to do supported?

Unfortunately this is beyond the scope of what we provide support for. However, some users successfully did what you are trying to do. They might want to contribute.

Please clarify. Do you mean that a strategy can only be debugged when running on live data, not in backtest?

Any users out there who can help with this issue? Have you been able to use VS to debug a strategy while backtesting?

I managed to debug a strategy when connecting and adding the strategy to the Strategies tab. But I can't seem to debug a strategy that I run through the Strategy Analyzer (i.e., backtesting). Have you done this?

(I don't care whether it's VS2005 or VS2008. I'll use either if it makes a difference.)

Yes. This is an example with a breakPoint into stategy code. There is not a loaded chart with the strategy. The running is into the strategy analyzer only.

PD: Of course, the debugging works also with the strategies over charts.

Works fine on VS 2008 too. If you haven't already, test using SampleMACrossOver strategy first before trying your custom strategy.

Well, it does work. I don't know what I missed, but I started over as whitmark suggested and it does work: I can debug in the strategy analyzer using VS2008. Thanks for the support.
