How can I add a description for symbols that do not have one

Some symbols do not have a description. Some stocks and most (if not all) ETFs, for example. How can I tell NT about any of these missing descriptions?

EV, if you're custom symbols are missing the description this could be added in the Instrument Manager directly for the master instrument - http://www.ninjatrader.com/support/h...nstruments.htm

      Thanks Bertrand,

      I understand.

The answer is that here is no sane way to do it. What is documented works for one or two instruments, but not for hundreds.

Please add another suggestion that there be a reasonable bulk way to do this. Perhaps something like the user supplies a file with a symbol and its description per-line.

Is there any way to have an indicator supply a text field for the Market Analyzer?

If so, I could just write a tiny indicator whose function was to return the description string for the symbol.

Thanks for the suggestion EV, unfortunately this not doable via indicator - you could add the instruments again to your instruments.txt and then 'reset' them in including your full description entered.

            Bertrand,

Thanks for the suggestion. That is exactly what I am exploring as we speak.

            Am I correct that:
            • Any changes to Instruments.txt are unsupported
            • I'd better keep a copy, because it will get replaced when the software gets updated

            Right?

Yes, EV that's correct - you would need to maintain the file then, but likely much easy handling anyways for your bulk requests.

Agreed. In the circumstances I think it is a good solution. I just wanted to be sure I understood the ground rules.
