Is it best to backup and uninstall the current version before installing a new

Should not be necessary. You should be able to install on top, but backing up first is always a good idea.

Follow up question

I see in the release notes that there was a fix for the IB / TF mapping .
I've been tracking this symbol right along . Was something not working right ?

For some users it could have been an issue. If you are having an issue please try going into your Control Center, Tools -> Options -> Misc -> Reset instruments.
