How to optimize the running of the optimizer

    Hi,
Does anyone know of any ways to speed up the optimizer?

Everything in terms of dataset etc being same, can adding, memory, cpu etc increase the performance i.e quicker.
    Thanks,

    Suleman

    Sileman,

You can try decreasing your optimizing time frame and the number of permutations you are running on to speed things up.

      Hi Josh,
      Thanks for your reply.

If I do not want to change the time frame, permutations, is there any way I can increase the speed?

What, I basically mean to ask, is given a set of data, timeframe and permutations, what can one do increase the optimizer's performance.

Can it use more memory? eg if one increases the RAM from 2Gb to 4GB, does it help
Can we allocate it more memory? eg If we only have 2GB and we know that 1.5GB is free, can we allocate say 1Gb to it?

I hope I am getting my point across!!

      Regards

        Suleman,

You can see my post here:

Basically, if you have 2GB of memory already, there is no benefit to more memory since NT is a 32-bit program and can't use more than 1.5GB (it often crashes at 1.3GB).

Also, NT is pretty poor at using more than one core. But, there is still some performance gain to be had if you build a new system. You can see my post above to get an idea.

So to answer your question, if you already have a dual core machine, then really all you can do is pray NT 7 will be faster, and that it comes out sometime soon (this year?).

          Hi Mike,
Thanks for your answer, that helps!

I am planning on having a dedicated PC just for NT(running optimizer). The idea being to run optimizer and backtesting(no complains here) and use the results for getting the optimum parameters for a strategy to AT with NT.

The optimizer will be running most of the time for different strategies and existing ones to validate on a continual basis. As such any configurable settings on NT would have been good :-(

Maybe NT7 will have these features!
          Thanks

NT7 will have optimizations on memory usage and performance.

              Hi Josh,
              Thanks for the update!

              When is NT7 due?

I had an optimizer run over night and didn't finish.. I then switch over to optimizing 1 parameter at a time and did what I needed to find out in about 2 hrs. I have a quad processor and never ran more then 25%,, so I dont think its a hardware issue on speed.
