    Instrument Manager, 'missing' stocks, ETF's

I am using NT7 and IB as my connecting data source.

I know the answer is in the forums but needed some clarification.

There seem to be only about 700+ stocks defined in the 'Instrument Manager' and minimal or no, ETF's. So, when I go to bring up a chart for an instrument that is not defined there, even though I have access to it via IB, I receive an error and the implication is that I need to go into the Manager and define an entry for every symbol that isn't in there, that I want to access.

    Is this correct?

If so, is there some additional 'download template' of most of the rest of the stocks and ETF's? Obviously, I do not want to have to go in and define each missing symbol.

I know I am missing something here ....

Thanks for the great support. - Mike

    Hi Mike,

    Thank you for your post.

NinjaTrader comes pre-loaded with the most commonly traded instruments however, you may find the need to add an additional instrument. Please follow the instructions below to add an instrument in the Instrument Manager.
    • From the NinjaTrader Control Center window select the menu Tools > Instrument Manager
    • Press the "New" button
    • *Enter in instrument specific information and select the appropriate exchange (add Default exchange for equities in addition to the actual exchange)
    • Fill in any relevant information under the "Misc" tab such as symbol mapping for your target connectivty provider
    • Press the "OK" button

    * If you wish to add an equity, this can be accomplished without following the steps above. Just open a chart (for example) and start typing in the symbol and a new instrument is automatically created.
The instrument is now added to the master instrument list. Please follow the instructions below if you want to add this instrument to an instrument list.
    • Select the instrument list you wish to add the instrument to via the "Instrument lists" drop down list in the upper left hand corner
    • Select the exchange (Default recommend for equities) as this will route orders to your broker smart routing system
    • Select the appropriate expiration date if this is a futures instrument
    • Press the "<" button to add the instrument to the list

You are now complete and can press the "OK" button.

It is also possible to add instruments to NinjaTrader by importing from a list. For more information about this, please see the following link: http://www.ninjatrader.com/support/h...stock_symb.htm

Thanks .... okay, I guess I see this as kind of a bad thing, given that ETF's don't seem to be represented in the default list even though they are frequently traded and the Universe of stocks is so much more extensive than what NT provides by default. Maybe it's a performance issue for the software, having a big database of stocks/ETF's in the Manager, I don't know.

Thanks for the pointer to importing a symbol list.

Does anyone have a procedure for generating a symbol list with 'most' of the stock symbols and ETF's or, is there a symbol list with most of that stuff that someone has already generated that I could steal?

      Thanks - Mike

        Hi Mike,

I will forward your request that more instruments be added to the default NinjaTrader instrument database. Thanks for your feedback.

This is a related question on importing a list of stocks.

Previously, I had manually added a few ETFs via the Instrument manager. I then discovered the "Import Stock Symbol List..." Utility in NT. I added about 10 ETFs with the utility. All worked flawlessly for the ETFs that I had not already entered via the Instrument manager, but for those instruments that I had already added, none of the "new" information (i.e., changed Session Template from 'Default 24/7' to 'US Equities RTH') was updated. I tried both NT 6.5 and NT 7, and I found out that they both work the same.

Is this on purpose for some reason, or is it a bug? I ask because the import utility leads you to believe that you are updating all the ETFs that you are importing... when in reality you are not.

Would it be possible to update the Import Stock Utility feature to update the attributes of ALL stocks in the list (even those that have been previously added to the database with the Instrument Manager?

          Thanks.

            Hello fosch,

This is as expected currently, though I will forward your suggestion on to my development team for further consideration.

Hello is it possible to import a description of the symbol alongside the symbol itself? (by importing a list of stock symbols). having only the symbol with no description might be confusing

This is not currently possible, however we are looking to improve these import methods in the next major release - exactly to what extended I'm not sure at this moment, but please check back closer to the release of the next version.
