    NT Running Very Very Slowly

    Hi
Had major problems this evening with NT coming to a standstill on repeat occasions - even without real-time data feed. Basically doing some back testing analysis. In the end it was not even getting through the start up.
I removed NT (using add/delete programs) & installed new version from the NT website. Unfortunately, despite a more rapid entry into the NT platform, the performance rapidly deteriorated to a standstill.

    Any ideas ???
    thx
    David

.....and now NT struggles to open again (approx. 10 min) & when open, struggles to do anything.

Is this an issue with a corrupt database again?
if so, the only issue I have with starting a new database is that I lose the oldest historical data from the continuous contracts - would there be any way to recover this ?

    thx
    David

        Hi.
I did exactly as per the e-mail instructions.
Reloaded back-up data (strategies, database, etc).
Everything works OK until I start backtesting/optimising & then the whole computer performance deteriorates significantly. Upon rebooting the laptop, again NT opens very very slowly.

        Any further help ???

        thx
        David

Are you running the latest NT 6.0.1000.5? If not, please update to this version. We did resolve a memory leak in the Strategy Analyzer. This may help although if you are running complex tests, computer RAM resources will be a limiting factor. See if this makes a difference.

Yes - I have downloaded the latest version. After the go-slow/stop on the backtesting, the computer basically dies with NT open. The strategy is not complex & i have had no issues previously with this issue with the same strategy-type. It just suddenly deteriorated to this inadequate performance last night for no apparent reason.

            thx

I would like to know several things -

                  - When running backtests, are their any other applications running?
                  - What are your PC specs, RAM and CPU?
                  - How long will a backtest take if you just leave it?
                  - When running a backtest, please open task manager so you can see memory usage, are you hitting the wall on RAM?

                    Ray - quite enlightening

1/ I do not typically have any other applications running when in NT.
                    2/ RAM = 500 Mg (inadequate); CPU = Celeron M380 (1.60GHz 400MHz FSB) - not even up to P4 level!
3/ Historically they have always completed within 2 min worst case for what I do - now it can take anything up to 20 min or the system can just freeze.
4/ Yes I do hit the wall on the RAM. During an optimisation, <5000k available (!). Approx. 10,000k when not optimising & NT sits idle. Approx 250,000k when exit NT & no application running vs. capacity of 500,000k.

Looks like my computer is inadequate to support NT.
Have just ordered 1 Gg RAM upgrade which will hopefully help.
What is surprising is that NT had been working OK until Thursday evening.

I think I will purchase a new computer that is 'NT compliant' - any other hints on minimum product specs that I should target.

                    thx
                    David

The bigger the better! As much RAM as you can afford and as fast as you can afford. We run 2 GB machines internally but I can see how you will need more in the next few years.

A Celeron for sure is inadequate.
