    buy power and cash values

    Hi,

I'm testing with the Sim101 account and I just found that in the Accounts tab the value of the buying power doubles the cash value. I have no open positions. Does it make sense?

    I attach an image.

    Hello,

    Thanks for the note.

Yes this is expected with simulator and buying power will always be double the cash value.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Oddly, my buying power says zero, though I don't have any open positions or unreconciled trades. ?? Click image for larger version

        Hello,

        Thanks for your post.

The account values that are displayed depend upon your connectivity provider. Some connectivity providers transmit partial account data, while others do not transmit anything:

NinjaTrader Continuum based connections do not transmit the Buying Power field to the platform.

Please let me know if I may be of any further assistance.

OK, thanks, Marco! Should I assume my buying power is the same as my cash balance?

            Hello,

            Thanks for your reply.

Buying power equals the total cash held in a brokerage account plus all available margin.

Please let me know if I may be of any further assistance.

Probably being thick but what does this mean?

"Buying power equals the total cash held in a brokerage account plus all available margin."

Margin by definition is not available as it is being used to cover a position surely and cant be used as buying power to open another position.

Does buying power have any relevance to futures, if you have enough in an account to cover initial margin you can open something if not you cant.

              thanks

                Hello poeds,

The 'Buying power' column shows the account's buying power which takes margin into account. Please see the link below.

I suggest to contact your broker to check its relevance to futures. If you have your trading account with the NinjaTrader brokerage, you can contact them at "brokeragesupport[AT]ninjatrader[dot]com". Our NinjaTrader brokerage team does not use the support forum.
