    Plotting EMA

How can I plot an ema on a chart that is not based on the chart its being plotted? For example. If I wanted to plot an EMA based on a 30 minute chart and plot that EMA on a 3 minute chart, what is the process if this is indeed possible?

    Thanks

    Hello,

    Thank you for your note.

Please see the following video to add a secondary hidden data series, and have the indicators plot off the hidden data series.

For EMAs it is pretty simple to have a 30 min EMA plotted on a 3 min chart,
Just multiply the period with 10. This will also wok with a SMA, but not with all indicators.

In fact, this is the reason that the original formula developed by Wilder Welles - who used a smoothing factor of k = 1/period - was replaced by the the formula 2/(1+period). It was one of the first arcticles in the Stocks & Commodities magazine, look for "Filter Price Data" by Jack Hutson.

Or you can also use the VisualEMA, which is available here:

        Plotting EMA

Much appreciated but to be clear the formula would be...

(target ema/actual chart period) x ema period = adjusted period

So if I wanted to plot a 20 period ema of a 60 min chart on a 5 min chart it would be...

        (60/5) x 20 = 240 (I would put 240 in the "period" line within the indicator)

This way I can adjust whatever periods I want if I know the formula

        Thanks

Correct, but this will not work for all indicators. But it will do the trick for the EMA. If you compare the outcome on your chart, you may find a difference - depending on the bar period. This is because NinjaTrader truncates bars at the session break.
