best indicator for identifying up or down trend

could anyone recomend what indicator may be best for identifying an up or down trend in any given market?

that's one of the most general questions anyone could ask.

this starts from the kind of bars you want to use. hour and day bars would require different indicators than second or minute bars. there are some bar types like kase and renko bars that show the trend the instrument you are charting is in all by themselves. in my opinion, one of the best indicators in general for the purpose of identifying a trend would be heikin ashi bars.

moving averages (pretty much all of them, except for simple moving averages which you should stay away from) can also work nicely. an exponential moving average on a chart with the right kind of bar type and using a appropriate period length can also be a magnificent tool to identify trends.


this is a really basic question, make sure you do as much research and simulated trading as necessary so that you can create your own winning system (some people call it edge) before trying to trade for real.
