Add new instrument

Hello..!

I was trying to find the instrument VXX in the list of instrument in Ninjatrader. I could not find it. So, I think I should create a new symbol, but the exchange of VXX is BATS and this not appear in the list of exchanges available from ninjtrader. I was reading a little of documentation about this exchange, and it says that CBOE acquired it.

Is it correct to put CBOE as an exchange for this instrument?

Are you perhaps referring to the VIX? CBOE Volatility Index?

If so this instrument is included in the platform, please see the screenshots below.


If not, Please provide more information about this specific instrument, If listed as the CBOE exchange, this would be the exchange to select when configuring the instrument.

Thank you for that information.

Please follow the instructions below to add an instrument within the NinjaTrader 8 platform:

• From the NinjaTrader Control Center window select the menu Tools > Instruments
• Click the "add"
• Enter instrument specific information and select the appropriate exchange (see the example below)
• Fill in the relevant symbol mapping for Kinetick
• Press the "OK" button

For example, the EMINI S&P 500 PREMIUM is added with:
Master Instrument: (user defined name) PREM
Instrument Type: Index
Exchanges: Default
Tick Size: 0.01
Symbol Map: Kinetick: PREM.Z

Can you show us how you did this? I don't see the VXX symbol in Kinetick.

Master instrument: VXX
Go to tools -> instruments -> add
Instrument type: Stock
Exchange: Default

In my case Kinetick symbol: VXX (I think is VXX for all providers) -> OK. and that's it

do you EVER forsee the ability to just connect to your data connection and have the ability for IT to do the adjustments for any/all instruments you might wish to add?
E.G in TOS I add a symbol I don't need to do any adjustments/mapping etc. it just plots the symbol as I asked it to you know user friendly.....

Thank you for your note.

NinjaTrader comes preloaded with the most commonly traded instruments.So adding these instruments is automatic, however there are many instruments that are not commonly traded that a user may want to add. These would need to be correctly mapped and added into that users database following the steps above.

Due to the sheer volume of instruments available and the frequency with which they are updated or changed it would be difficult to automate this process. However if you'd like I'd be happy to add this as a feature request for you.

I'm also having trouble getting the VIX to load in a chart.

NT 8 with Interactive Brokers Data feed

I enter VIX & it pulls it up (attached) but nothing loads.

I've tried checking the symbol mapping but all looks fine. Would this be a data feed issue?

Thank you for your post.

By default the VIX index should be mapped correctly to Interactive Brokers, making it likely this is data feed related.

You'll want to reach out to Interactive Brokers team and make sure you're enabled for live data for the VIX index, please note that delayed data through Interactive Brokers is not supported through NinjaTrader.
