How to determine if an instrument has shortable shares...

    Hello awesome community!

I am developing a strategy that can create automated long or short positions.

As you know the broker must have short shares ready to sell for short positions to be filled.

Q1: Is it possible to find out how many short shares are available on a given instrument?
Q2: Is it possible to know if 'Short Selling Restrictions' are active on an instrument?

    Thanks!

    Hello JPPoulin,

    Thank you for your post.

There would not be a programmatic way to figure out how many short shares are available from your broker or if any selling restrictions are in place on an instrument. I would advise you to inquire with your broker for information on any restrictions that may be in place on their end. That being said, if you enter an order and your broker has restrictions set, the order would be rejected and an error message displayed from your broker.

Please let us know if we may be of further assistance to you.
