    Volume not updating in real-time

    Hello everybody,

When I opening my Forex chart (eg. 1hr chart) and let it run for several hours, the volume indicator is showing only low volume from the time I opened the chart. When I reload the historical data after a while, it shows the correct volume of the bars.
Calculation is on each tick and my data provider is Oanda (Forex).
    Thanks!

    Hello,

    Thank you for the post.

Forex volume data works a bit differently than other instrument types because there is no centralized Forex exchange.

Because of this, each data provider calculates volume a bit differently, some count ticks and some send basic 0 and 1 data. Using volume with forex can be misleading because you would not be looking at the volume of the market.

On your chart, the volume data your provider is sending represents the number of "tick" updates that occurred to the bid/ask during a specific time interval. The volume reported in NinjaTrader for "bid" and "ask" will be the same (this also includes last price, since NinjaTrader substitutes bid price for last).

Since the API is "polling" based, not every tick makes it to the platform. Therefore, the volume updates you see are the number of bid/ask ticks that were missed since the last price update.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

      Thanks Melissa,
this indicates that i have to reload the historical data on my 1 hr chart every hour?
I don't understand why TradingView is updating the volume in real-time with a Oanda connection.

        Hello,

        Thank you for the reply.

I could not speak to the data processing capabilities of TradingView but they do likely have a different data provider than Oanda for Forex data.

If you want the bars to be reflective of the additional data in your volume indicator then refreshing your chart would be your best option.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

          Thanks Melissa,
My TradingView account is connected to Oanda.
Well, I have to refresh 13 charts every hour then. This is pretty unfortunate since I was planning to buy your product.
I messaged to Oanda and they wrote I should contact you guys. I can see already how this ends.

              Hello,

              Thank you for the post.

Unfortunately this is a limitation of Forex data in general, and your data provider more specifically.

As mentioned before, Forex does not have true volume data in the way it would be for stocks or futures. Instead your provider gives you data about each tick of price movement to replicate volume data.

Since these volume bars are built using this tick data, it is expected that their values will change when you reload the chart.

Here is more information on why those ticks change after a reload:

                Thanks for your response, Melissa.
This is weird. I checked other platforms that are connected to my Oanda account and I don't have this issue there.
I really like your software but this is a major issue for me.
