(Trend) Lines moving/getting displaced on volume charts?

    Hi,

I use the line (F2) tool to draw lines on my volume charts. I've noticed that as price moves/changes, so can the lines too.

Just happened right now in front of my very eyes. Please see attached picture.

Dotted line is the original line drawn at swing highs before being moved.

Solid line is how the line ended up after being displaced by Ninja.

Is this some kind of bug? Any solution for this?

1500 volume chart on ES. I've noticed it on MES too using 1000 volume charts.

    Hello Johnny,

Once a line has been placed it should indeed stay at the location it was placed in.

The only exception to this would be if the line itself is associated with an indicator and is meant to move (e.g. a line drawn at the current market price).

I'd like to take a look at your log and trace files, as they might indicate what is not working as intended.

However, as these files may contain personal information (e.g. your license key and account name) we would prefer if you could email us these files.

To do this, please follow the steps below:
    1. Open your (My) Documents > NinjaTrader 7/8 folder
    2. Right-click on the trace and log folders and select "Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder" for both of them
    3. Attach the zipped files to an email and send it to [email protected]
To ensure the files reach me without delay, please note the following in your email: ATTN Manfred - 2619078

Thank you in advance, I look forward to your email!

      Hi, Manfred,

Thank you! Just sent you an email.

FWIW - I do use the newest version of Ninjatrader.

This have happened I believe 50 + times easily over the last months. I haven't bothered with it until today, but it's not a new problem.

Note: I don't think I ever experienced it on a time based chart. Only volume charts.

      Best regards,

      Johnny

I’m having this same problem (on a tick chart though) did this issue get resolved?

          Hello Ctarket,

          Thank you for your post.

In this particular scenario, this behavior is considered expected as the drawing objects were being drawn into the future. Drawing objects are only accurately 'anchored' (locked into a fixed value) if the values already exist. Are you creating drawing objects that reach into the future of the chart?

Yeah so I made a video of what I am talking about (attached it). And yeah its into the future. This does not happen on time charts though only on a tick chart for me. Even though the line is being drawn into the future on a time chart as well. It just seems like this shouldn't happen....

              Hello Ctarket,

For this to occur on a time-based chart, the interval would have to be very small because it would require that expected bars are missing. For instance, a 1 minute chart will most likely never see a period of time where there are no trades for a full minute and so the future anchor point appears to stay fixed. Since that future anchor is technically variable until the bar fills, there is a higher chance of the 2nd anchor point becoming offset when the interval is something like 1 second because there is a higher chance of there being a 1 second period of time where no trades occur.

It would be great to have this resolved...

This is expected behavior, so there is not a 'bug' to resolve. I have submitted a feature request for this with the tracking number SFT-5004. I will add your vote this request.

Well - to me it's still considered a bug.

I frequently have to re-draw my lines because of this. Very cumbersome.

                        Hello gunslinger1,

                        Thanks for the note.

As Zachary noted, this is expected behavior but there is a pending feature request for this with the tracking number SFT-5004.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Any update on this? 80% of my work is going toward redrawing lines.

                            Hello danielkitchen,

                            Thank you for your post.

I do not have any updates or a timeline of when or if this feature will be implemented. There are a number of different considerations that must be made by our Development team before implementing a feature request.

When a feature request is implemented, you'll find a description of the new feature in the release notes:If you'd like me to add your vote to this feature request, please let me know and I'd be happy to do so.

This is a BIG problem I have run into now that I am in the process of upgrading from NT7.

Why would trend lines that are supposed to be stationary move around? That means that the trend lines drawn become invalid soon after.
Why would this be "expected behavior" ?
This should NOT be a feature request, this should be an existing opened bug that needs to be addressed asap.

BTW, I have not experienced this behavior in NT7.

                              Thank you!
