Putting a moving average of larger timeframe on smaller timeframe chart

I think I've read this can be done. but I can't find documentation etc. anybody can give me a hint how to do this? e.g., put moving average of 5 m bars onto chart of 1 min bar. TY

    Hello,

Below is a video walk-through on how to accomplish this in NinjaTrader 8:

Is there a way to do this but have the MA calculated based on the smaller time frame chart? For example, if I want a 60m MA on the 5m chart, I want the 60m MA to be calculated every 5m rather than every 60m. That way the 60m MA isn't just a straight line every 12 bars on the 5m chart.

        Hello,

You can use the same method as the link above, but instead using the smaller time interval as the primary data series.

Let's say I want the 60m MA on the 5m chart, how do I get the 60m MA to print every 5m bar? I don't get what you mean by "using the smaller time interval as the primary data series".

          Thanks

I tried doing the math which should result in the 240 bar EMA of the 5m chart to represent the 20 bar EMA on the 60m chart but when I overlapped the two lines, they are not the same because I don't think they are calculated the same way.

              Hello,
I would ensure the data series the EMA is set to has enough days of data to calculate correctly per your EMA settings. You can increase the amount of data loaded with the data series menu as the option labeled 'days to load'.

I have it set to 180 days which should be plenty for a 60m EMA

                  Hello,
To confirm, are you stating the 240 period SMA of the 5 minute chart should equal the 20 period SMA of the 60 minute chart? If so, this would not be the case as the 5 minute OHLC bars will have entirely different data than the OHLC values of the 60 minute bars.

Yeah I also came to that conclusion but how else can I achieve my goal of having the 60m EMA on the 5m chart and have it updating every 5m bar?

                      Hello,

You can use the method in the first video linked to accomplish this, however if you want it to update as price comes in be sure to set the 'calculate' method of the EMA to 'on price change' instead of 'on bar close'.
