stop and target cancelled

Hi, I was running a strategy in real time which contains a stop loss and a profit target. At the same time, I was running a backtest which resulted in some data halts/gaps on my charts/DOM. During one of these gaps in data, NT cancelled the stop loss and profit target orders of my running trade, but did not close the position, leaving me exposed. I'm sure the first thing you'll advise is not to run data heavy backtests at the same time as a live strategy. Ok, but how can i be certain the error won't occur under other conditions...
Can i get some assistance examining the error to ensure it can be avoided?
