Run Ninja Trader on all the platforms - Linux or Mac OS X

    Hello,

I'd like to suggest an idea for you. I don't know if you are aware of possibility to port Ninja Trader to all platforms like Linux or MacOsX using Mono. Mono is open source implementation of Microsoft's .Net Framework.

From .NET to Linux in Five Steps

I'm Ninja Trader and Linux enthusiast, and I understand that it might not be easy ( u can make lightweight version of Ninja for example ). I think there is no really good trading platform for linux or macos and it may give you an edge over your competition.

Thank you and wish you all the best

    Hello plompi,

Thank you for your post and suggestion. I will forward this to our development team for future considerations to the NinjaTrader platform.

That would be so cool if we can run this on OSX (and Linux). For sure Apple has been booming and is still growing his market share. One day I hope to download an OSX imge form here and finally wipe my Micorsuck installation which i only have because of trading.

Instead of completely rewriting NinjaTrader for Mac OSX, I suggest a much quicker way to get it working (although a bit of a workaround) is to work with CodeWeaver software to make it work in their Crossover software that adapts Windows applications so they can run directly in Mac OSX, no Windows installation needed. This would be a huge thing for Mac owners (like me). Currently using emulation software like VMWare's Fusion or Parallels Desktop is too much of a resource hog for anything but the very fastest machines with loads of RAM. I've tried Parallels, and with 4GB of RAM and no other app open on my laptop, its only marginally OK.

Currently CodeWeavers has a listing for compatibility of NinjaTrader 6.5, which it shows as "untested":
NinjaTrader uses broker data to stream charts and order information to the user desktop.

I just tried installing NT 6.5 using Crossover and the installation quits at the beginning. I don't know what to do from there, it does the same thing every time. In the only forum entry for NT on Crossover's Forum, the writer describes the same experience.

If you have an unexpired version of CrossOver (you can download a demo) you can "vote" for some attention on getting NT functional by going to that link above and on the right side in the "Rankings" box, click the Vote for me link. You will have to register, but its free and worth it if enough do it.

Being software developers themselves, I'm sure CodeWeavers would see a big opportunity to make some $$$ from Mac people (their application is very reasonably priced), and it would be a very cheap way of satisfying Mac users, too, compared to a rewrite. Please have your developers have a go at it, should be easy to figure out how to get it to install, at least. If you give them enough bucks, they will put it on their priority list.

I too am a Mac user with a PC only to trade. The mac platform is so superior it is night and day. So include my vote for Mac compatible Ninja.

            Hello 108steve,

Thank you for your post and suggestion. I'm sure somebody will forward this to development team for future considerations to the NinjaTrader platform

Seriously though, I wouldn't say that using mono means completely rewriting Ninja. Mono provides runtime environment that can execute .NET code on platforms like Linux and Mac, most often with ''little or no modification''. NT developers need to migrate this code while addressing possible platform-specific incompatibility issues.

And that is better solution than CodeWeaver software I guess, but I will vote for it anyway. There have been several attempts to run NT under Wine and all unsuccessful as far as I know, mine included.

              found this for metatrader

wondering if it would work for nt as well?

              Mt4 /Mt5 on MAC OS
Here is how to get MetaTrader4 (MT4) Forex trading platforms to work under Mac OS X.

Requirement: You must be using a Mac with the Intel Duo Core Processor.

              1. Download CrossOver
Download a 30-day trial version of CrossOver from CodeWeavers at
Don't buy a Windows license, don't reboot and don't use a Virtual Machine. Try a free trial of CrossOver to run your Windows software on Mac, Linux and ChromeOS.

(the for-sale version only costs $60).

              2. Install CrossOver and quartz-wm
At the end of the installation it will request you insert Disk 1 from your Mac OS X install disks which came with your Intel Mac. This is important as a small file (quartz-wm) needs to be extracted from the X11 package. If for whatever reason you don’t see a dialog indicating that this was successfull (happened to me 2x), delete all installed CrossOver files and try again.

              3. Create WinXP Bottle in CrossOver
At Configure/Manage Bottles within CrossOver create a new winxp bottle. You can name it anything you want. For here, I’ll refer to it as the winxp bottle. This will create a bottle stored within your user folder (see path below).

              4. Copy/Paste MFC DLLs
From within your valid, licensed copy of Windows XP, navigate to the system32 folder and locate the following DLLs: mfc40.dll and mfc42.dll. Copy these to your Mac and then move them to the equivalent WinXP “bottle” within your user folder. The path is username/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/winxp/drive_c/windows/system32/.

              5. Copy/Paste wingding Font
To properly show symbols and arrows, locate the wingding.ttf file in your Windows proper installation and copy it to your CrossOver installation in the /windows/fonts/ directory.

              6. Install MT4
Download the MT4 installer (e.g. mt4setup.exe) from your broker. I tested using FXDD’s latest MT4 build 205. Double-click on the .exe and it should take you to CrossOver and begin running the MT4 installer the same as you’re familiar with when running on Windows. Select all of the default options for where MT4 will be installed. At the end, de-select (this is important) the option to auto-launch MT4 after installation is completed. (This doesn’t work.)

              7. Launch MT4
From within the CrossOver application, go to the Programs menu and then select the MT4 application (it may be within a sub-menu with a symbolic link to the actual terminal app).

MT4 should launch and look just as good as from within Windows! And, MetaEditor launches as well!

It works perfectly on Ubuntu's Server 12.04 and should be an example to everybody else - I use TOS as well as NT and only run a Win OS to use NT. I would happily ditch windows if I could.
