Trading more than just a handful of $ / one account / a few instruments and in one currency, or using different holding periods and different investment objective... will get confusing if just drop all positions in one bucket. Especially when it comes to PnL analysis and reporting.
Therefor every enterprise system trading platform (which Ninja Trader is not as a affordable server less user land client solution) supports creating and managing portfolios.
Luckily Interactive Brokers is now (Trader Workstation TWS 924.2e, 2012-03-20) supporting the capability to create "models" aka portfolios. Check TWS Online Help:
http://www.interactivebrokers.com/en...s/twsguide.htm > Model Portfolios
From my point of view this is the greatest improvement in IB technology since IB Gateway was released and the burden of re-connecting every day is gone (Yes is works with NT7, most of the time).
It means investments can be grouped by purpose, signal source, trading strategy, currency,... or what ever is reason a position is create.
Please support this feature in Ninja Trader!
As a first step it would be great if you display the Models/Portfolios as sub-accounts (like sub-accounts of an advisory account) and that trades could be placed to a model instead of an single account.
It appears the feature is not yet available to (all) production accounts. It can be found in simulation accounts and in IB account management. I did not check IB demo account edemo and fdemo.
Thanks for checking ;-)
