    Linux Support -- Ever?

    Hello,

I have seen many folks requesting Linux support for future releases. I am wondering if this is ever going to happen.

The issue with windows is that it requires frequent updates (not to mention security vulnerabilities). If you're wanting to use modern hardware to host an algo server then you will find it difficult to avoid windows 10--which is the ultimate algo system no-no due to uncontrollable updates and telemetry. Even hosting services running windows will have to take their servers down for maintenance. In comparison, Linux systems can run for years with 100% up time, and even receive updates without rebooting. Not to mention, Linux is free and more secure than windows.

    Your responses are appreciated.

Yes, that is my point. NT is not supported on Linux. I've read that post already and this one as well http://ninjatrader.com/support/forum...ad.php?t=76594. I am asking if NT will ever be supported on Linux.

            Hello jflaggs,

Currently NinjaTrader does not have plans to create a version for any operating system other than Microsoft Windows.

Would you like to submit a feature request for the NinjaTrader Development to consider this for a future version of NinjaTrader?

              Hi Chelsea,

Thank you for the professional response. I know that it is more than a simple feature addition and it may not be supported anytime soon. However, I would just like to put the question on record along with others so that it may be considered and addressed at some point. I think it would be great to have an option to run NT for Linux as well as Windows, so yes, I would like to submit a request.

                Hi jflaggs,

I've submitted a feature request on your behalf for the NinjaTrader Development to consider developing NinjaTrader for Linux.

Once I have a tracking ID for this request I will forward this for future reference.

If you know how, you can turn off updates in Windows 10, and there is always Windows 7.

Windows 10 defer update is only available for Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise. We tried running Win7 in a dual boot, but there are issues with the drivers and some are missing. If you want to use Win7 natively on any modern hardware, you will likely run into this problem as well since MS wants to push you to Win10. So you're left with running Win7 in a VM which is not ideal for some applications where you want to utilize your hardware resources efficiently (for example, you lose hardware acceleration and CPU is now split between native and VM OS).

Point is, as MS pushes all types of new updates without your consent (such as the update from your Win7 or 8 to Win10), it could really cause problems for your trading system. With Win10, the last thing I want is to receive a mandatory update while I have active orders out there. This has happened on all of my Win10 machines.

Do you have a bullet proof way of solving this problem? If so, please share your ideas! Otherwise, I'll have to pay $100 for yet another upgrade from Win10 Home to Pro and then pray that they don't change the defer update option later down the road.

I have never used Home versions, but I am vaguely aware that there are some things that have no GUI access at all in Home editions.

I am not talking about deferring updates: I am talking about stoppng them completely, until one decides to turn them on again. In Pro+ editions, one can use the Group Policy Editor or the registry, of course. In Home editions, you may be stuck having to use the registry.

There are quite a few posts out there on how to bend Windows Update to one's will, even in Windows 10. Stopping Windows Update completely usually involves disabling the service, in such a manner that Windows cannot turn it back on. It is also possible to simply set your Ethernet connection to a metered connection. One can do this only with a registry edit.

Here are just 3 of the url's that I found.

Yes, it's possible to disable automatic updates on Windows 10, and in this guide, we'll show you how.

And here is the search that I used: https://www.google.com/search?q=perm...utf-8&oe=utf-8

You do not have to allow Windows 10 to update whenever it feels like it. This can be stopped via selecting "Metered connection," and you can do this *without* diving in for a registry edit.

                        Here's the fix:

                        1) Update to Windows 10 Creators (Windows 10, Version 1703). Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...reators-update

                        2) To set Ethernet connection as metered in Windows 10 Creators Update, do the following.

                        a) Open Settings.
                        b) Go to Network and Internet - Ethernet.
                        c) Click the Network icon on the right.
                        d) On the next page, enable the option Set as metered connection under "Metered connection".

                        ...and "done."
