NT8 hangs while loading workspaces on a start up

    NT8 hangs while loading workspaces on a start up

    Hi,
    While loading 6 workspaces on the start up NT8 hangs on the last active one. It logs the following error:
    2017-09-23 18:11:15:602|3|16|Chart rendering to a software bitmap failed. There is likely a problem with a chart object's render method. D2D error = 'HRESULT: [0x8007000E], Module: [General], ApiCode: [E_OUTOFMEMORY/Out of memory], Message: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. '
    To temporary overcome this issue I had to remove the last active workspace from _Workspaces.xml. When initial loading is complete I could open my last active workspace without any issue.

    My PC has Windows 10 OS and 32G of memory. Only small portion of memory (18%) is being used by various applications while this error is occurring. Task Manager reports that NT8 uses 1.3G when all the required workspaces are loaded. I suspect it uses more while loading.
    One more detail I find peculiar: Task Manager reports 13 windows under NinjaTrader 8 while there only 8 open when the aforementioned workspace is active. The other 7 reported by Task Manager without any name. I attached a screen short.

In your message please include a link to this forum thread and a copy of today's trace files. You will find these diagnostic files in the Documents > NinjaTrader 8 > Trace folder. I will need to review a copy of the files which are named 'trace.20170924.XXXXX.txt'. There will likely be multiple files for each day.

        There are too many variables involved which can be slightly different which would make a solution for one user experiencing these symptoms completely different from another user.

        Please write into PlatformSupport[AT]NinjaTrader[DOT]com with a brief description of what you're experiencing and a link to this forum thread.

          Hi Dean,

          Maybe it is too late and you already have a solution for it, but i have just been trhough the same problem. My NinjaTrader 8 hangs while starting it up. I increased my laptop's memory expecting NT8 would improve its performance, didn't work. Just yesterday upgraded to a solid state drive disc and my laptop improved its performance, but NT8 didn't.

          The problem:

          When starting up my NT8 it would hang for minutes, several times Windows would say it was unresponsive. I noticed within the task manager that NT8 was not consuming much CPU, nor its memory usage was increasing, but i did notice, as the person that initiated this thread (CycleAlert), that NT8 had a lot of ghost windows/threads, and when hovering my mouse over NT8's icon in the task bar, it would show more chart windows than i actually had in my workspace, some of them were black, and i saw them coming and going (appearing and disappearing).

          The Solution:

          I shut NT8 down, then renamed the file (@ ../Documents//NinjaTrader 8/workspaces/) "_Workspaces" to something else, then restarted NT8. It started very quick, then selected my usual workspace. It loaded very smoothly. I saved the workspace with the reposition of command control and some other changes i made to my charts and tested shuting it down and restarting NT8 and it works fine. Since then, i try not to save the workspace every time it asks to do so, since i suspect that the "_Workspaces" file gets corrupted over time and slows NT8 down. But if it happens again, i know the drill to fix it. Since the fix, i see in my task bar there are only the charts i have in my workspace and they don't come and go as before (see picture attached).

          I hope it helps you and the NinjaTrader team can do something to fix it for good.

          (Update) I do see more subtasks of NT8 than the charts and comand control than i actually have. Pls see the other two attachments.

                      While this may temporarily resolve an issue, this is only a way to treat the symptoms and not the root cause. NinjaTrader should not require the deletion of files to run properly. Please contact us via email per my previous post if you are running into these symptoms so we may assist you individually.

                        robott - your solution worked for me also.

                        One thing I noticed before stumbling upon your solution is that if I loaded NT7 before NT8, everything worked as expected. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

                          Glad it worked for you.

                          After more than a year of this work around i would have expected that the NinjaTrader team would have solved it for good. I see that's not the case. Very unfortunate and disappointing.

                          In my case i stopped using NinjaTrader, at least while i'm away from Futures, and continue using MetaTrader 4 for Forex trading. In case a return back to Futures, NT8 would be my platform of choice, but i would expect this issue to be solved by then.

                          Good luck in your trading, and do not let a platform to stall your trading activity!!!

                            robott, 'ghost' windows appearing in the task manager as seen in the original screenshot is actually completely unrelated to the error message found by the user CycleArt. These appear due to the way NinjaTrader charts are built in Windows and this by itself has no negative effects on NinjaTrader or your PC. You can think of this as a picture and picture frame - they are two individual components that together form a single unit.

                            The actual symptom of the root post here is 'NT8 hangs while loading workspaces on a start up'. This can have many potential root causes. The '_workspace' file you suggest removing to resolve this issue in post #5 is actually the exact same thing CycleArt stated as a workaround in the original post. This is not a solution - this is temporarily resolving a symptom of an underlying root cause which is not addressed by these steps. We've been encouraging all users experiencing this symptom to write into us at PlatformSupport[AT]NinjaTrader[DOT]com so we may identify the unique root cause on their PC/NinjaTrader installation instead of treating the symptom.
