Does chart in tabbed window update when not selected tab?

Hi, quick questions about when charts update.

I am trying to understand what the possible performance impact would be if I have a tabbed chart that is not shown, vs. just a minimized chart.

If I have a tabbed chart window with charts on each tab, do the charts that are not on the selected tab still receive updates?

I believe that a completely minimized chart does not receive updates and so does not affect performance. Is the same true if it is just in a tab that is not currently shown, where the tabbed window itself is not minimized?

    Thanks.

    Bob.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your post.

Charts and tabbed charts will continue to update whether or not they are minimized or in view.

In fact charts in other open workspaces technically would be using PC resources as well.

Do you have charts that are not updating as expected or are you just trying to preserve PC resources?

I look forward to your reply.

      Thanks Dennis for your response.

At this point I am a bit confused.

In the Help topic on the IsSuspendedWhileInactive property, this appears:

      Definition
Prevents real-time market data events from being raised while the indicator's hosting feature is in a state that would be considered suspended and not in immediate use by a user. Enabling this property in your indicator helps save CPU cycles while the hosting feature is suspended and not in use by a user. Once the hosting feature is in a state that would no longer be considered suspended, the historical OnBarUpdate() events will be replayed allowing the indicator to catch up to current real-time values.

Suspension occurs when the indicator resides on:

      • Minimized Chart
      • Minimized Market Analyzer
      • Minimized Hot List Analyzer
      • Minimized SuperDOM
      • Background tabs of above features are considered "minimized"
      • Inactive workspaces in the background
      Link: https://ninjatrader.com/support/help...leinactive.htm

I have taken this to mean that charts in these situations are, as it says, suspended. I recognize that this property is a setting for an indicator, but it seemed to me that it depends on a window being in a suspended state. Does "suspended" mean that the window gets no data updates, or just that the indicators to not update if this property is set to true (the default)?

If the indicators don't update, it would seem that on this count alone the performance impact of the chart would be less when minimized or otherwise "suspended." If the entire chart doesn't update, the impact would be more. But if a minimized chart is not "suspended," then I don't understand this reference.

      I'm well-confused now....

I don't have a particular chart issue I am working with, just trying to understand how to efficiently set up my charts with performance in mind.

      Thanks for any clarification.

      Bob.

        Hello Bob,

        Thank you for your post.

This feature does exist however it will only suspend the indicator and it will not suspend the live data coming into the chart.

There for the indicator will continue to not update in this suspended state but since you are still receiving live data the charts will continue to update.

Please let me know if I may be of any further assistance.

Thank you. This is exactly what I needed to know.

I appreciate your explanation. It is very clear.

Hi Dennis, one more quick question (well, actually two more ) that this discussion has made me think of:

            1. Sort of related: if you have an indicator on a chart that is in a selected tab, and which normally will have its indicators updating, but you have unchecked the Visible property for that indicator, will the indicator still be processing but just not show its plot, or is its actual calculation suspended? In other words, will the non-Visible indicator still be consuming CPU cycles or not?

            2. Just as a matter of curiosity, does the information about minimized charts and charts in non-selected but open workspaces still updating their price data also apply to NT7?

            Thanks again for your help.

            Bob.

              Hello,

              Thank you for your post.

If an indicator Visible property is unchecked, then it will NOT consume any resources.

And as for as NinjaTrader 7 you would still see CPU resources being used for minimized charts and open workspaces running in the background.

Please let me know if I may be of any further assistance.

                Question...

Is there a difference in resource used when this property is checked VS unchecked?
Same question for minimized charts and open workspaces running in BG?
