    Problem: Chart Panel Properties Window

    Hello,

When using NT7 on a VPS, there is one thing that causes my charts to freeze, sometimes for several minutes.

It is when I rush to scale a chart vertically, but in my rush I guess I accidently double-click on the chart.

This has happened quite a few times and it is a disaster.

It is especially bad if I somehow cause several Chart Panel Properties windows to be coming up; then my charts get frozen for a long time.

Is there any way to disable the Chart Panel Properties window so that it does not come up, if I accidently double-click on it?

There is no way to disable the Chart Panel Properties window from appearing when you double click on the vertical margin.

However, the act of opening the Chart Panel Property window via any method should not cause a freeze or any issues. What you're describing is unexpected.

I'll likely need you to contact us via email so I can learn more via your log and trace files, but lets see what we can find out with non-sensitive information here on the forums:
    • What version of NinjaTrader 7 are you using? Please provide the entire version number. This can be found under Help -> About (Example: 7.0.1000.X)
    • Is this reproducible 100% of the time? In other words, if you were to purposefully open the window, would NinjaTrader freeze?
    • How much RAM does your VPS have?
    • What is the CPU and RAM utilization when the issue occurs? You can monitor this in the Windows Task Manager.
    • What version of NinjaTrader 7 are you using? Please provide the entire version number. This can be found under Help -> About (Example: 7.0.1000.X)

      Hi Patrick,

      Thanks for your reply.

The version of NT7 on the VPS is NinjaTrader 64-bit 7.0.1000.38

It does appear to be replaceable; I do a Control > Click to scale my charts. I just tried now to Control > Double-click in my 75 Tick chart and the chart froze for a little while.

But that happened because I kept clicking on the chart after it did not respond initally, which is what I do when in a rush and while forgetting that this happens.

Today when my charts froze, the market was moving very fast (which is the worst time for it to happen, because I missed a big price move). So maybe it is more likely to happen when a lot of data is coming in very fast.

After the issue resolved itself, several Chart Panel Properties windows came up, indicating that I kept clicking on the chart in my effort to quickly get something to occur.

      * The RAM on the VPS is 1.50 GB
      * The current CPU shows from 14% to 62% and the Memory is at 65%
      * NT7 version 64-bit 7.0.1000.38

The first thing that stands out is the VPS' available RAM does not meet the minimum requirements to run NinjaTrader 7. The minimum is 2GB and even with 2GB I would expect that you would not experience very good performance even with a very simple workspace. Keep in mind that all other programs on your PC require some of that RAM as well.

More information about the requirements can be found here:

With that said, some VPS have the ability to increase and decrease their available RAM on demand. I would suggest contacting your VPS provider to see if there is a way to permanently increase the available RAM to ensure this is not the root cause. 4GB or more would be preferable.

Also, I would recommend ensuring that your workspace(s) are optimized for performance. Guidelines on how to do this can be found here:

Finally, ensure you're running the 64-bit version of NinjaTrader and not the 32-bit unless you have a specific reason for using the 32-bit version.

If you are still able to recreate the issue easily, please open a new blank workspace, close all other workspaces, then on the new workspace create a new chart with no custom add-ons or templates and attempt to reproduce the issue.

          Thanks Patrick,

I did not realize there was so little RAM on the VPS until you had me check to see.

I will contract the VPS vendor regarding the issues you brought up.

          Thanks,
