NT8 Backup vs SDF File

Hi there,

So I was an idiot and didn't backup my old NT8 work before wiping my hard drive for a fresh install of Windows 10. However, I did save my old 'Ninjatrader 8' folder from the 'Program Files (x86)' folder, and I have access to the old SDF file.

I'm looking to get the last strategy I was working on before the wipe. Can I swap out this SDF with the existing one I have, or is there a better way to reload a NT8 strategy into a new install?

For reference, I did also backup my 'Documents' folder, which included old NT7 strategies and NT8 files.

Are you trying to get the actual NinjaScript Strategy file itself or are you trying to get your trade history / performance while running an instance of the strategy?

NinjaScript files are not stored in the database. The NinjaTrader.sdf database contains Instruments, Instrument Lists, Custom Instruments, and historical trade execution data.

Yes you can transfer this from one computer to another to transfer the historical trade information.


If you are looking to transfer NinjaScript files, you can export these individually, or you can export a backup.

Thanks for the reply. Let me clarify:

I’m trying to get a strategy I was working on in NT8 into a new laptop that has a fresh install of NT8. The old installation is gone, but I have both the NT8 Program Files folder and the NT8 folder from the ‘Documents’ folder.

Where are NT8 strategies typically stored?
