I have a core2 e7300 overclocked to 3.4Ghz, 2 gigs of ram, and an Intel extreme edition X25E SSD. Well, everything runs the same, except obviously load times in reduced, also java based apps like IB's TWS load up quicker. However I know somethings still take time, like seeking through market replay data, I still get a momentary 3 second pause when I jump back and fourth throughout the market replay data.

Core i7 and/or AMD Phenom II will be your choice for
buying a new computer (i would prefer the first here
for best performance, the second offers good $/perf.).
If you already have a good Core 2, and you consider this
computer for trading only, i would wait and see
(especially if it is a quad), there would be no need
to update because Core i7 offers no advantage offer
Core 2 regarding NT6&6.5 and the advantages in NT7
still have to be seen first... parallelizing software
is an non-trivial task... with several VM's running
several instances of your trading software (even when
it can utilize only one core) you can utilize a Core i7@
5,0GHz to 100% already, but of course there is a lot
of "overhead by hand"... thats why people prefer to have
software which can utilize all the cores by themselves

MSI just released their uATX X58 board for $150ish, the X58M. That will help shave $100 off any i7 build right there.
You've also got the second generation of i7's due out in a couple months I believe, and that will help cut costs more. Just like always...
In my office/lab I have an E6850, Q6600 and my i7 920. They all have 8GB or more of memory and fast RAID setups. I would definitely not build anything other than another i7 having said that. But that's just me.

Has anyone else tested this out on Amazon's EC2 boxes?
I just tried on one of my images, with Amazon's "high-med CPU instance". My computer describes it as Xeon E5345 @ 2.33 GHz, 1.69 GB RAM. Windows Server 2003 R2 - Datacenter Edition.
Elapsed time: 5 minutes, 3 seconds.
