future chart has 100 bars but yet is able to calculate a 200 day moving average?

my nasdaq index cme future chart [symbol=NQ] has only 100 daily bars but yet is able to calculate a 200 day moving average [yellow line in attachment]. is the chart software smart enough to access bar price history previous to 100 bars ago? that's the only explanation i can think of.

    Hello joemiller,

The SMA is calculated using the price bars loaded in the chart. I created 2 charts. First a daily chart with 100 days with SMA(200) and another with 365 days. They show different SMA values.

thanks jason. however, i am still confused [i.e.]

      for 100 bars...
how can a 200 day moving average be calculated with only 100 bars?

      for 365 bars...
did the future exist [and therefore have a closing price] a year ago?

If the chart is only loading 100 days of data the indicator will only calculate with the 100 days that are available. In order for it calculate for the full 200 you would need to load that amount of data within the chart.

i created a 20 year daily bar chart then requested an export of all the bars so i could use that data for testing. however the download was for only 7 weeks and not 20 years?

how can i capture the number of years of data on the chart so i can use that excel spreadsheet data for my NQ CME future strategy testing?

The amount of historical data available will depend on the data provider you are connected to within NinjaTrader.

Can you tell me what data provider you are connected to.

To export continuous data I would suggest opening a continuous chart using the symbol NQ ##-## then once your data request has been completed export data for NQ ##-##.
