By NinjaTrader Team

Capitalize on Volatility by Trading SPIKES Futures

Traders looking for a more effective way to speculate on market volatility should look no further than SPIKES volatility futures. SPIKES futures provide an innovative new contract to the volatility markets and a marketplace previously limited to trading the VIX.

Now available through NinjaTrader Brokerage, SPIKE futures allow traders to:

  • Hedge and diversify portfolios
  • Speculate on real-time price action
  • Help manage risk
  • Implement volatility-based trading strategies

Why Trade SPIKES Futures?

SPIKES futures are derived from the SPIKES Volatility Index (SPIKE), which offers some key features and benefits over other volatility products. The SPIKES Volatility Index is a measure of the expected 30-day volatility in the SPDR® S&P 500® ETF (SPY). Using the SPY options traded across all US options exchanges provides a more robust volatility calculation.

Offering exceptionally fast index calculation and price dissemination, SPIKES futures price data is published every 100 milliseconds, which helps ensure real-time accuracy of current market conditions. This proprietary technique uses a blend of trades, bids and offer prices in the implied volatility calculations to help insulate the index from erratic price fluctuations.

Project a Volatility Range Using SPIKES

SPIKES futures provide a direct, efficient way to gauge market sentiment and model risk by using real-time value to project an approximate expected price range, up or down, over the next 30 days.

  • Volatility Implied Range Example: If the SPIKES Volatility Index is at a value of 20, this implies a potential trading range of +/- 5.9% (20 / √12) over the next 30 days.
