What is an Option Chain?

An option chain is a common interface for trading options and lists all available options for the selected underlying futures contract, both calls and puts. Also known as an option matrix, it displays price information for the underlying futures contract as well as all call prices, put prices, strike prices, and expiry information for each option offered.

Intro to NinjaTrader Option Chain

Below is a NinjaTrader Option Chain window with E-mini S&P 500 (ES) futures selected as the underlying futures instrument.

At the top of the Option Chain window is the quote display. Here you will find quotes for the selected underlying futures contract. Below the quote display is the option chain itself, which shows available options for the futures contract, the dates that the options will expire and how many days until expiration.

Once an option is expanded using the arrows to the right, you can see strike prices in the center column, call quotes on the left and put quotes on the right.

The horizontal red line delineates In the Money (ITM) prices for both calls and puts as indicated with an arrow pointing down for calls and up for puts. The last traded price is designated with a small red marker.
